Asya Abdrahman | Zuwwar Ennabi Gnawa Ensemble | Gnawa Kronik | Zambaleta |
Asya Abdrahman is an artist based in Marin County who creates mixed media paintings on paper. A current project of hers revolves around the colors, textures and motion of the Gnawa lila ceremony. Tim Abdellah is collaborating on an aural interactive dimension to the project.
Zuwwar Ennabi Gnawa Ensemble is the first Bay Area group dedicated exclusively to Moroccan Gnawa music and dance. The group is led by Bay Area Moroccan musician and storyteller Yassir Chadly and musician and scholar Tim Abdellah Fuson. Their performances feature joyful ceremonial dances, songs of hope, faith and transformation, the incessant clacking of qarqaba (iron clappers), and the deep trance funk grooves of the guinbri (three-stringed bass lute). Zuwwar Ennabi ("the visitors of the Prophet") offer a rare opportunity to get a dose of undiluted Gnawa music west of Casablanca.

Music and dance school, community center, space of hospitality and communication - Zambaleta (lit., spontaneous chaotic street party) is more than just a place for learning music and dance forms - it's an environment where communities come together around musicking and can experience its transformative potentialites.
I teach classes in Gnawa Music and Movement there (with Yassir Chadly). Currently on hiatus as Zambaleta moves to a new space.
